Charles Mingus was quite critical of avant-garde jazz musicians of the mids. On one of his stage announcements in the new Mosaic set “The Jazz Workshop Concerts”, he chides the free players for claiming that “they closed the book on [bebop] when most of them still can’t play Bird”. Yet in his music, Mingus provided the ideal bridge over this chasm of musical styles. Reply

May 30,  · There was no one in jazz quite like bassist Charles Mingus. An iconoclast, an intellectual, a satirist and a poet, Mingus essentially redefined the rules of large ensemble jazz during his heyday in the s and ’60s, liberating it from the constraints of swing and bebop and opening it up to the possibilities of the avant-garde. Prestige Records (–79). American musician Charles Mingus went beyond the trends of jazz with a personal style so distinctive that the trendsetters scrambled to catch up with him. In elevating the string bass from a mostly rhythmic to a solo instrument, he changed the way not only jazz, but also pop music, is played.. Mingus was born in Nogales, Arizona, on April 22, Reply

To call it "The Very Best Of" Charles Mingus is, at best, an issue open to debate. What you're getting here is a sampling of Mingus from the three albums that Rhino owns the rights to: The Clown - (songs #4,5) Blues & Roots - (songs #6,7,8) Oh Yeah - (songs #9,10,11)/5(9). Reply
